Trial begins against Cardi B for assaulting a former security guard

This Tuesday, the civil trial began against rapper Cardi B, who in 2018 was accused of assaulting a former security guard during a doctor’s appointment.
In a Los Angeles court, the plaintiff, Emani Ellis, stated that the incident occurred in an office Beverly Hills obstetrician when Cardi B was four months pregnant with her first child.
According to testimony, the rapper ridiculed her, spat on her and cut her face with a two- to three-inch fingernail, causing injuries that required plastic surgery. In addition, he accused her of calling her racial slurs and making fun of her weight and professional performance.
The rapper, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar, denied all accusations of physical assault and racism, stating that there was only a verbal argument after a misunderstanding that Ellis was recording her without permission.
Cardi B's defense also questioned the consistency of Ellis's story and presented the length of the rapper's nails as evidence to refute that she could have caused the cut.
The trial will take place in two phases: first, Cardi B's legal liability will be determined, and then a decision will be made on any monetary damages claimed by the plaintiff.
Cardi B has previously faced civil and criminal legal proceedings; However, for this case the judge restricted the use of this background information during the trial so as not to unduly influence the jury.
Another ongoing lawsuit
Cardi B faces another civil lawsuit filed by a fan, legally known as Jane Doe, following an incident that occurred in July 2023 during a concert at Drai's Beachclub in Las Vegas.
At that time, during the performance, Cardi B asked her fans to throw water on her to cool off due to the high temperatures. When the fan agreed to the request and threw liquid towards the stage, the singer reacted angrily and threw her microphone directly towards the crowd, allegedly hitting the plaintiff in the face.
The controversial moment was captured by several attendees and quickly went viral on social media.
The fan accused Cardi B of assault, negligence and is seeking compensation for physical injury, emotional distress and psychological damages.
In her complaint, the fan argues that the incident exacerbated her psychological distress, especially after seeing that the microphone was later auctioned for nearly $100,000, which aggravated her sense of public humiliation.
