The success achieved by Luis Gerardo Méndez with his participation in "Mentiras: La Serie" has recently been overshadowed due to the criticism he received for a comment made during the press tour of said production. The same thing, according to dozens of internet users, had transphobic undertones. How did the celebrity react? Here we tell you.

The controversy began when, objectively, he stated that he had been a pioneer of musical series in Mexico with this new project: “There are no references to musical cinema or musical television in Mexico, it doesn't exist. So it's not like you can go to a producer and ask them: 'How do you do it?' So we had to invent it ourselves, discover it, and it was very complicated,” he declared on 'Los 40'.

As a result of this statement, Luis Gerardo Méndez soon became the target of criticism and, in an attempt to clarify his words, ended up providing material for a second wave of attacks from his haters.

“There are themes in the play that were very relevant 16 years ago. For example, the arc of Manuela, who was a trans woman in some ways, that arc is problematic today. We were interested in touching on other types of themes as well. So that's also what I was referring to a bit when I said that a musical theater play had never been adapted into a television series in Mexico,” he added.

Faced with dozens of accusations for describing the work as problematic, Luis Gerardo Méndez took to his Instagram account to combat those who accused him of issuing a “transphobic” discourse.

“How they love to take statements out of context to gain clicks, instead of celebrating that content like this is being received with so much love,” lamented the actor who has participated in important productions such as “Club de Cuervos” and “Half Brothers.”

The big screen heartthrob defended himself by arguing: “Eliminating the character was a direct recommendation from GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation)."It was problematic to present a trans woman character whose sole arc was having deceived four women and then found her identity. It wasn't the right representation for the community in 2025. Even the play changed its ending in response to this recommendation," she concluded.
