Alejandro Sanz talks about the depression he suffered: “I had never felt anything like it in my life”
The singer shared details about the diagnosis he faced two years ago and the clinical sadness of the emotional void that led him to seek professional help
Alejandro Sanz, one of the most emblematic figures in Spanish music, decided to break his silence and speak honestly about a dark chapter in his life: his struggle with depression.
In a recent interview with the newspaper El Pais, on the occasion of the upcoming premiere of his documentary series When Nobody Sees Me on Movistar+, The artist elaborated on the diagnosis he received in 2023, which at the time raised concerns among his fans. Sanz was emphatic in differentiating common sadness from a clinical depressive episode. "I know what sadness and depression are. Because I have been sad, and it was nothing like what I felt when I was diagnosed," the singer explained. For him, the depression did not manifest as a feeling of sadness, but as an “absolute lack of feelings” and an overwhelming sense of emptiness he had never experienced before. The most critical episode occurred in May 2023, when Sanz posted messages on his social media admitting that “sometimes I didn't even want to be there.” Today, with the perspective of time, the musician acknowledges that he was able to overcome it thanks to a combination of professional help, the unconditional support of his friends, and the use of medication. “The first time it happens, you don't recognize it, and that scares you twice as much,” he confessed, admitting that he even had some subsequent “relapses” that he now knows how to identify and manage better. With this revelation, Alejandro Sanz highlights the importance of mental health in the entertainment industry. His testimony comes days before the start of his new tour, demonstrating that, although the road to recovery is not linear, it is possible to find “the firefly in your chest” even in the darkest moments.
