Debi Nova, a singer in constant evolution
"Everything can become a song" is the new album by the Costa Rican artist
Debi Nova is very clear why the songs on her most recent albums—especially the newest one—are rawer, with fewer filters and address more personal topics.
“I think motherhood had a huge impact on me,” said the singer-songwriter in a recent interview. "I think there is something that happens with motherhood; at least it happened to me that many fears were removed and I think that everything can become a song."
“Everything can become a song” is precisely the name of the most recent album by Debi, who was born in Costa Rica but emigrated to the United States when she was 17 years old. He is currently promoting the deluxe edition of this album that includes a new song and several remakes of the original songs.
This is Debi's second album since her daughter was born, and making it was different from others because in addition to having done it without the fears that she had on other albums, she let the process flow freely.
“If one day I felt happy and at peace I would write a song about it,” he said. "And if I felt frustrated the next day I would write a song about it, without questioning myself so much about what kind of album it was; it was like nothing more than a little bit of getting out of the body and opening those channels."
For the new edition, Debi had new collaborations and sonic explorations that she had not attempted before. Among some of the collaborators are Leonel García, from the duet Sin Bandera, in the ballad “Se va”, and Alexandre Carlo, from the Brazilian band Natiruts, with whom he sang “Aurora”. She also included Kendall Peña, a Costa Rican artist, like her, who is opening doors in Mexico. With him he performed “Yesterday's News.”
Debi, 45, likes, like in the old days, to record full albums, even though the trend is to release songs not as part of an album, but as singles that come to life independently.
“Yes, I still have that romantic idea of the album,” he said, “I love capturing a moment in my life in a body of work more than in a song, and yet, there have also been singles in the past.”
In her fifteen-year professional career, Debi has recorded six albums; The last three have been between 2024 and 2026. The seventh is already in the oven, or at least Debi was already making plans to travel to Mexico City to record it. She hopes to release her new material in 2027.
Debi preferred not to delve into details about what her next album will be like, “but I can say that it is an album that I am going to record in a very different way from my previous ones.”
