Universal Pictures released the first official trailer for 'The Odyssey', the highly anticipated film adaptation of Homer's legendary epic, directed by the acclaimed Christopher Nolan Nolan.
The film will chronicle the long and arduous journey home of the Greek hero Odysseus—played by Matt Damon—after the Trojan War. The trailer offers a first glimpse into the monumental scale of the project, showing Odysseus and his men shipwrecked, braving stormy seas, traversing hostile lands, and venting into shadowy caves where creatures of unsettling size lurk. A standout sequence features the soldiers inside the infamous Trojan Horse.
The cast, of mythological proportions, includes Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Odysseus's faithful wife; Tom Holland as his son Telemachus; and a stellar cast including Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo, among others. Nolan not only directs but also writes the screenplay and produces the film alongside his wife and frequent collaborator, Emma Thomas. The project was filmed on location around the world using the latest IMAX technology, promising an immersive viewing experience.
“A masterpiece”
In previous statements, Nolan had emphasized his need to fully own any project he undertook after the success of “Oppenheimer,” winner of seven Oscars in 2024.
Universal executive Jim Orr called the film “a masterpiece, visionary, one of a kind,” while John Leguizamo praised Nolan's work ethic, comparing him to “an independent filmmaker, but with crazy money.”
'The Odyssey' will arrive in theaters on July 17, poised to be one of the biggest releases of the year.
