I am a businessman: Canelo Alvarez is open to buying Atlas
Saul Alvarez did not rule out the possibility of buying the red-and-blacks, but said that now he is not focused on his investments, but on his next fight
Saul Alvarez is an enthusiast of the red-and-blacks of Atlas and did not rule out being the next owner of the club now that Grupo Orlegi is looking to get rid of the club to avoid timeshares in Mexican soccer.
At a conference In a press conference days before his fight against Terence Crawford, Canelo spoke about this possibility and, although it is nowhere near a reality, he has not refused to analyze the opportunity to see if it is a good investment for him.
When asked by ESPN Knockout if he would like to be the owner of the Guadalajara club, the boxer said that if it is a good business to increase his fortune he could consider it, although he stressed that for the moment he is only focused on defeating his rival at Allegiat Stadium next Saturday.
“The truth is that I have not stopped to think about it, I just saw it now that I was in training, I think that was when they started trying to sell Atlas. It is not the time to think about those things, but now that I am back, if it is for something good, why not? I am a businessman,” he said.
This arose because Grupo Orlegi announced two months ago that they were looking for the next owner of Atlas, in order to comply with the no timeshare rule in football Mexican, since they also own Santos Laguna, another club that competes in Liga MX.
“Orlegi Sports has initiated a process to explore a planned and structured transition in the operation of Atlas FC, with the objective of ensuring continued growth under a group that understands the relevance, context, and potential of the club, both in sporting and social terms. This process will be carried out responsibly and in full compliance with the agreements established with Liga MX,” they announced on July 15th through a press release.
Is Canelo enough to buy Atlas?
Although the official figure that the next owner of Atlas will have to pay is not known, it is estimated that the cost of the club would be between $200 and $250 million dollars, according to data from various media outlets such as Infobae and Futbol Total.
On the other hand, Saul Alvarez's fortune is around $600 million dollars and after next Saturday it will be $150 million higher, since it is the purse that the Mexican boxer is estimated to take home, who, by the way, signed a contract with Sheikh Turki Al-Sheikh, which consists of five fights in exchange for $400 million dollars, the first was against William Scull and this will be the second.
Taking this into account, Canelo would have enough to buy Atlas and still have money left in his wallet, but he would have to analyze several factors to determine that it would be a good business that could give him returns, so only he knows if he will take this seriously.
Saul Alvarez and William Scull will face each other again next Friday during the weigh-in ceremony, one day before the long-awaited fight.
