“Michael” leads the global box office a month after its release
The biographical film of the “King of Pop” is directed by Antoine Fuqua and in the leading role is Jaafar Jackson
A month after its release, the movie “Michael” is having an incredible performance at the global box office. The film directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson is showing that negative reviews overshadow the legacy of the “King of Pop.”
According to data from Comscore, “Michael” grossed $26 million in the United States during its fourth week in theaters and reached $83.8 million worldwide, ranking first on both box office charts.
The film debuted at number one in mid-March, but was surpassed weeks later by “The Devil Wears Prada 2.” However, the fashion sequel lost nearly 400 theaters in its third week, returning the throne to “Michael,” who is proving to have one of the most loyal fan bases of the year.
Other movies at the box office
Third place at the US box office: “Obsession,” the supernatural thriller from Focus Features, the debut of emerging horror director Curry Barker. The film earned $16 million in its US premiere and $23 million globally, placing sixth on the world list.
In third place overall was “Dear You,” a Chinese independent drama that grossed $39 million in its second week.
With $703.8 million accumulated worldwide, “Michael” is positioned as the second highest-grossing film of the 2026 season. It is still behind “Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” which has a lead of about $200 million; The difference could be reduced in the coming weeks if the biopic maintains its pace.
Although this could change, since “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” are coming soon and could be a surprise at the box office.
At the CinemaCon convention in April, director Jon Favreau showed off the first few minutes of the film to an enthusiastic audience, promising epic action with the lovable Grogu using the Force and Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, taking out stormtroopers with lasers, flamethrowers and his fists.
The duel for the crown has just begun. But in the meantime, the “King of Pop” continues to reign at the box office.
