Taking antibiotics with milk is a more common mistake than it seems, and doctors and pharmacists warn that it can significantly reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. Many people turn to milk to "protect their stomach," however, this practice can prevent the medication from working properly and prolong the infection. But be aware, the problem isn't milk itself, but rather the interaction between certain antibiotics and the minerals present in dairy products, especially calcium. Which antibiotics should not be taken with milk? Ideally, none. However, specialists at the Texas Poison Center mentioned some specific ones, such as ciprofloxacin and tetracyclines, which have the ability to bind to the calcium present in milk, cheese, or yogurt. When this occurs, the antibiotic forms a complex that the body cannot absorb correctly. As a result, a significant portion of the drug is lost during digestion and does not reach the bloodstream in the amount needed to fight the infection. This not only reduces the effectiveness of the treatment, but can also delay the patient's recovery.

Doctors warn that when the antibiotic doesn't work completely, bacteria can survive and adapt, which promotes bacterial resistance. That's where the real risk lies.

Not just milk: other products to avoid

The negative effect isn't limited to dairy products. Supplements and over-the-counter products containing calcium, magnesium, or iron, such as some antacids or multivitamins, can also interfere with the absorption of certain antibiotics.

For this reason, doctors recommend taking some antibiotics one to two hours before, or up to six hours after, consuming calcium-rich foods or mineral supplements. Respecting these intervals allows the medication to be absorbed properly.
