Mexican reporter threatened by drug traffickers has not received protection measures
Pedro Montaño was threatened by members of organized crime in the state of Guerrero, so there is a risk situation for the communicator.
The organization Article 19 denounced that, more than a month after journalist Pedro Montaño was threatened by members of organized crime in the state of Guerrero, state authorities have not complied with the protection measures ordered to guarantee his safety.
According to the organization, the attack occurred on June 9, when the reporter received threats while carrying out his reporting work.
After the incident, he activated the panic button provided by the Federal Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, which allowed the immediate mobilization of elements of the National Guard and the municipal police.
However, Article 19 indicated that the Attorney General's Office of the State of Guerrero continues without implementing the necessary protection measures, despite the fact that there is a current risk situation for the communicator.
The organization described this omission as a breach of the authorities' obligations to safeguard the integrity of those who practice journalism.
The journalist has been part of the Federal Protection Mechanism since 2022 due to previous threats related to his informative work.
However, Article 19 warned that the lack of coordination between federal and state authorities has prevented the ordered measures from being carried out effectively.
The case adds to the constant alerts issued by national and international organizations about the persistence of violence against journalists in Mexico and the deficiencies in the implementation of protection mechanisms intended for this sector.
