Trump dismisses IRS commissioner within two months of being confirmed
Trump dismisses Billy Long as IRS commissioner and names the Treasury secretary as acting head
The Donald Trump administration replaced IRS Commissioner Billy Long less than two months after the former Missouri congressman took office. This is the latest in a series of reshuffles at the IRS.
A White House spokesperson confirmed Long's removal, first reported by The New York Times. The administration did not immediately offer an explanation for the decision, which surprised IRS staff.
For the time being, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will serve as acting commissioner.
The IRS had four acting commissioners in the early months of the Trump administration before Long was confirmed to post in mid-June.
Long said in a post on X that he was excited to be taking on my new role as ambassador to Iceland. He did not mention his departure from the IRS.
Bessent would be the sixth leader of the tax collection agency in the first eight months of the Trump administration.
Long, a former Republican congressman and auctioneer, supported dissolving the agency as a member of Congress.
The agency has joined the Trump administration's efforts to use government records and data to help identify and deport undocumented immigrants working and living in the country.
A Treasury Department spokesperson thanked Long for his service in a statement, adding that “a new nominee for Commissioner will be announced in due course.”
