Recent actions by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis have sparked a wave of criticism and concern nationwide, especially after the shooting deaths of two city residents, the latest being Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, who was shot by a Border Patrol agent.
Former President Bill Clinton called the events “horrible scenes” that, he said, he never thought would happen in the United States, and warned about the consequences of these operations could have for the country's democracy.
The former president spoke out on social media, joining the criticism of former President Barack Obama. In her message, Clinton directly accused the Trump administration of lying to the American people about the actions of federal agents involved in the Minneapolis shootings. Clinton denounced that masked federal agents have detained people, including children, in their homes, workplaces, and on the street. She also noted that peaceful protesters and citizens exercising their constitutional right to observe and document police actions were arrested, beaten, and exposed to tear gas. “The most serious thing,” he added, “is that in the cases of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, both 37 years old, these operations ended with people being shot dead.” “All of this is unacceptable and should have been prevented,” stated the former Democratic president, who also harshly criticized the official response after the events. According to Clinton, federal authorities have attempted to discredit the publicly released images and testimonies, while also promoting “increasingly aggressive and antagonistic” tactics, including blocking investigations by local authorities. Despite this, the Trump administration has reiterated that the agents acted in accordance with protocols. Over the weekend, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that Pretti “attempted to obstruct a police operation” and that he “attacked the officers.” However, videos of the incident and sworn statements released later appear to contradict that version. Beyond the specific case, Clinton made a broad appeal to the citizenry. In her message, she urged Americans not to give up their fundamental freedoms and to see this moment as a historic turning point. "Throughout our lives, we face only a few moments where our choices shape the history of years to come. This is one of them," she wrote. “If we give up our freedoms after 250 years, we may never get them back,” she concluded.
