Claudia Sheinbaum speaks with Trump and Melania: she praises progress in economic negotiations between Mexico and the US
Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, assures that Donald Trump is satisfied with her government's efforts to consolidate a better bilateral relationship
After holding a 40-minute telephone conversation with President Donald Trump, Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, indicated that the trade relationship with the United States continues to advance.
“We held a A productive and cordial conversation with the President of the United States, Donald Trump. We continue to make progress on trade issues and the bilateral relationship. We agreed that both teams will continue working together. I also had the pleasure of greeting his wife, Melania, whom I met during my recent visit to Washington,” she said. This Thursday's phone call is the second the president has held this month, and it even delayed her usual morning press conference from the National Palace by an hour and a half. When questioned about the security agenda that has caused so much concern for the 79-year-old Republican, particularly regarding the strategy to confront the drug cartels operating in Mexico and the strengthening of the northern border to prevent the crossing of migrants and drug trafficking into the United States, Sheinbaum stated that a team of Mexican officials presented their work plans to representatives of the U.S. authorities, which has satisfied President Trump. “Regarding security, Roberto (Velasco) was in Washington with a team from the Attorney General's Office, the Ministry of Security, and their counterparts in the United States. The agreements we reached, the understanding we have with them, continues to progress, without any new issues, but nothing additional came up in the conversation. President Trump agreed with me that we are making progress on everything, on the general understanding we have; there was nothing more to it,” he emphasized. Regarding possible modifications to the trade agreement established between the two countries,The president of Mexico acknowledged that some U.S. officials want to increase rules of origin on issues unrelated to the automotive industry, but so far there has been no progress on this matter. “They recognize that Mexico has the best trade agreement in the world, and we continue to make progress on both the tariffs we have now, as well as on what they call non-tariff barriers and on what interests them for the ongoing review of the treaty,” she said. In a message posted on the Truth Social platform, Donald Trump indicated that communication with Claudia Sheinbaum will be constant, as there are issues he wishes to discuss in more detail. “I had a very productive phone conversation with the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum. It was very positive for both countries. Much of the conversation focused on the border, the fight against drug trafficking, and trade. We will be speaking again soon and, ultimately, will schedule meetings in our respective countries. Mexico has a wonderful, smart leader. You should be very happy about that!” emphasized.
