Tricia McLaughlin will leave her post at DHS amid criticism
The departure of the Department of Homeland Security reported reportedly comes amid criticism of the handling of immigration
Department of Homeland Security accused Tricia McLaughlin will leave her post amid growing criticism of the Trump administration's hardline immigration policies.
Department of Homeland Security officials familiar with the matter told POLITICO that Tricia McLaughlin, representative for Secretary Kristi Noem, will leave this week officially inform your colleagues of your decision.
The departure of the officer who played a prominent role in the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement comes after a wave of criticism that called into question the department's credibility.
CNN reported that, according to a source close to the matter, Tricia McLaughlin had considered leaving the position since December, but remained in her post after the shootings that resulted in the deaths of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti at the hands of federal agents in Minneapolis. In Good's case, McLaughlin was quick to characterize his actions as an example of "domestic terrorism."
The officer's time at DHS followed her previous service in the first Trump administration, where she worked for Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and at the State Department on gun control issues. In this administration, the president praised the "wonderful Tricia McLaughlin" after her appearance on Fox in December and even asserted that: "Tricia knows what she's doing!"
This departure comes at a sensitive time: DHS entered its fourth day of shutdown due to a lack of agreement to fund the department until September, while Republicans and Democrats negotiate possible reforms to ICE and CBP.
So far, neither McLaughlin nor DHS has responded to the published information.
