Trump signs bill to officially reopen the federal government
From the Oval Office, Donald Trump ends the longest government shutdown in US history
After the House of Representatives passed the bill, with Senate support, to end the longest government shutdown in US history, Donald Trump signed the bill that officially establishes the reopening of the government.
Before Trump signed, the House held the final vote, 222 to 209, for the government funding bill.
“It is an honor to sign this incredible bill and get our country back up and running,” Trump declared in the Oval Office before signing the agreement proposed by Republicans. “I just want to tell the American people not to forget this,” the president declared, calling the shutdown, which was extended due to the lack of agreements on healthcare subsidies, “Democratic extortion.” The legislative package includes three appropriations bills that provide funding through September of next year and keep the rest of the government operating at current levels until January 30. It also includes full funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), ensuring its operation through September. More than 40 million Americans rely on food stamps. The legislation also offers limited protections to federal workers who have been targeted since Trump took office. It reinstates thousands of government employees who were laid off during the government shutdown and guarantees no further staff reductions until at least the end of January. Most House Democrats opposed the legislation because it did not address the expiration of health care tax credits, which were central to the party's demands for the government shutdown. As part of the agreement with Republicans, Senate Democrats were promised to vote on the issue by mid-December, setting the stage for the next major battle on Capitol Hill. However, despite the government's reopening, analysts say that a return to normalcy will take time.
