Diego Cocca can’t get the “formula” after the Liga MX
The Argentine coach conquered Mexican soccer with Atlas. However, Diego Cocca is now accumulating setbacks in his career.
Diego Cocca is a respected coach in Mexican soccer. The Argentine coach has had several processes in the Liga MX. After reaching his peak years with Club Atlas, the Argentine coach has left through the back doors in his recent processes.
In Liga MX, Diego Cocca has managed Santos Laguna, Xolos de Tijuana, Club Atlas, and the Tigres de la UANL. But it was with the red-and-black team that he was able to lift trophies.
The Argentine managed the "Zorros" for 98 matches. In that number of matches, he left a record of 37 wins, 25 draws, and 36 losses. Diego Cocca achieved a two-time Liga MX championship in the 2021/2022 season and also won a Champion of Champions trophy.
The South American coach won these three trophies and positioned himself as one of the most coveted coaches in Mexican soccer. But from there, the Argentine's career began to decline.
Diego Cocca: Stumble After Stumble
Diego Cocca's next destination was the UANL Tigres in January 2023. The Argentine only managed 5 matches in which he obtained 3 wins and 2 draws. However, Cocca left the feline team through the back door.
The Buenos Aires-born coach left the club at the beginning of the season to answer the call of the Mexican national team, a much bigger objective.
In February 2023, Diego Cocca was announced as the coach of El Tri. But his time with the Aztec team would only last 4 months. The South American managed 7 matches in which he obtained 3 wins, 3 draws, and 1 loss.
The straw that broke the camel's back was the painful fall in the semifinals of the Concacaf Nations League. Mexico fell 3-0 to the United States. El Tri finished third in that tournament.
In December 2024, the Argentine coach would get another opportunity. Valladolid, a Spanish first division club, trusted Diego Cocca to save them from relegation. But once again, his time with the team was short.
Diego Cocca was only allowed to stay with the Spanish team for two months.Diego Cocca managed eight matches for the club, achieving just one win and seven losses. While he managed Valladolid, the Spanish club conceded 21 goals and scored only five. This led the board, once again, to prematurely end the Argentine coach's contract. Now, Diego Cocca will manage Talleres de Córdoba in Argentina. This is a new opportunity for the South American to demonstrate that his knowledge and spark remain intact. He hasn't managed any official matches so far, but he didn't hide his motivation at his club presentation. "We're going to work as a team to put together the best squad we can. We're not going to think about whether great players will arrive, whether they were already there, or whether they were in their first or second stint. What interests us is whether they can really perform in the team we're going to put together and whether they have the desire and commitment to do so. Working as a team means working together with the board to put together the best squad," Cocca said at his presentation.
