They reveal that Fernando Gago suffered a heart attack after a game in Chile
The former Chivas and Necaxa coach showed signs of discomfort in the hours before the diagnosis
Fernando Gago's medical situation was clarified this Saturday after the University of Chile released a new report on the health status of its coach. The report issued by the Clínica Alemana in Santiago confirmed that the Argentine coach suffered an “acute myocardial infarction” and that he had to undergo an emergency procedure to treat the cardiovascular problem detected.
The update came after the first information that had indicated an emergency hospitalization after the match that the blue team recently played in Chilean soccer. The new report provided details about the intervention carried out and the evolution of the 40-year-old former soccer player.
According to the medical document, Gago “underwent an intervention to treat coronary heart disease caused by the obstruction of an intermediate arterial section.” The report added that during the procedure a stent was placed, a device that allowed normal blood circulation to be restored.
The clinic also reported that the coach is progressing favorably. According to the statement, the Argentine remains in “good spirits” and will begin a cardiac rehabilitation process under medical supervision in the next few hours.
Universidad de Chile reorganizes its coaching staff as recovery progresses
Gago's absence will force immediate adjustments to be made to the club's sports planning. Universidad de Chile will face its next match against Santiago Wanderers for the Chile Cup without the presence of its coach on the substitute bench.
The responsibility will temporarily fall on Fabricio Coloccini, member of the coaching staff and main assistant to the Argentine strategist. Meanwhile, the institution will closely monitor the coach's recovery before defining the steps to follow regarding his return to daily activities.
During the day, the president of Azul Azul, Cecilia Pérez, together with the general manager José Ignacio Asenjo, visited Gago at the medical center. After the meeting, the board highlighted the commitment shown by the coach even before his hospitalization.
"Knowing that he led the game while feeling bad moves me again, it's the commitment he has to the club. It makes us reconfirm that we believe in his project. There are pending procedures, I don't know if he will be out early tomorrow. What happened to him is strong news, but he is in good hands. Early on he didn't feel well, but his commitment to the U was greater," said Pérez.
The leader also explained what the coach's immediate desire is in the midst of his recovery. “He wants to train again, he wants to be on the field,” he said.
The current coach of Universidad de Chile began his career on the bench in 2021 leading Aldosivi. He later coached Racing Club, where he won two titles, before moving to Chivas de Guadalajara, Boca Juniors and Necaxa. Since March 2026, he has been in charge of the Chilean university team.
For now, the focus is on his medical evolution, while the club hopes that the rehabilitation process progresses favorably after the intervention that allowed his cardiovascular condition to be stabilized.
