All of the pitchers on this list, with the exception of Verlander and Roger Clemens, are members of the Hall of Famers. Clemens has been accused of using illicit substances during his major league pitching career.
Verlander has played 20 seasons for four teams, including the Tigers and Astros. He has 263 wins, 156 losses, a 3.33 ERA and 3,503 strikeouts. The 42-year-old right-hander also has the Rookie of the Year Award, three Cy Young Awards, an MVP Award, nine All-Star Games and two World Series rings. Justin Verlander had a bittersweet outing after reaching 3,500 strikeouts. Verlander reached 3,500 strikeouts and shortly after, things started to fall apart for the three-time Cy Young Award winner when the Giants fell 8-0 to Washington in front of 40,000 fans at Oracle Park. “I was just happy to get it, happy to have a moment with the fans,” said Verlander, who has a record of 1-9 in 20 starts with the Giants and a lofty 4.53 ERA. “A cool milestone. I really appreciate what it took to get there.”
While acknowledging frustration with how the year has unfolded, Verlander compared his performances to the 2022 campaign, when he went 18-4 with a 1.75 ERA with the Houston Astros en route to winning his third Cy Young Award.
“Things are good, things are good,” Verlander said. “I’ve spent a lot of the season looking at comparables. It’s right on par, literally almost top to bottom, with (2022) when I won the Cy Young. So, I think things are good.”The results have been frustrating.”
