Monterrey thrashes and advances to the round of 16 against Dortmund
Rayados completes excellent group stage at the Club World Cup and will represent Liga MX in the round of 16
Liga MX will be among the last 16 teams that will fight for the title of the FIFA Club World Cup courtesy of Rayados de Monterrey.
Guided by the talent of Jesus “Tecatito” Corona, who scored one of the best goals of the tournament, Rayados did their part by defeating Urawa Reds of Japan defeated Rayados 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Rose Bowl. The goals came from Nelson Deossa, with two each from German Berterame and Corona.
When the other Group E match, between Inter Milan and River Plate of Argentina, ended 2-0 in favor of the Italian club, Monterrey secured its place in the round of 16. A 2-0 draw in the match held simultaneously in Seattle would have eliminated the Mexican club.
In the round of 16, Rayados will face Borussia Dortmund of Germany on July 1 in Atlanta.
Inter Miami had already secured its place in the next round, the only of the three MLS clubs to do so. Monterrey joins them as a representative of CONCACAF. Pachuca, the other Liga MX club in the competition, was eliminated after just its second match.
Rayados can boast that in the World Cup group stage, they tied the European runner-up, held one of the South American giants scoreless and then thrashed an Asian football powerhouse.
Inter finished top of the group with 7 points, Monterrey followed with 5, River Plate was eliminated with 4 and Urawa Reds 0.
Rayados resolved with three goals in nine minutes
The Mexican team almost got the lead in the 3rd minute, when Stefan Medina headed in a cross from “Tecatito” Corona and sent the ball to the crossbar of goalkeeper Shushaku Nishikawa.
Urawa Reds had their chance to tie the game, like when in the 23rd minute, Yusuke Matsuo arrived alone on a through ball to the second post, but his right-footed shot went wide.
Rayados knocked on the door again in the 26th minute after a mistake by the Japanese defense. Alfonso Alvarado found the goal open and his left-footed shot from outside the area went just wide. Urawa was saved,But Monterrey's goals were only a matter of time.
The first came in the 30th minute. Colombian Nelson Deossa picked up the ball in the opposition's half, outwitted an opponent, and fired a powerful left-footed shot from about 35 meters away. The ball seemed to bounce off goalkeeper Nishikawa, who missed terribly and swung in his attempt to make the save to make it 1-0.
Four minutes later, Alvarado assisted German Berterame in the box, and the Argentine striker finally scored his tournament debut with a soft touch down low to make it 2-0.
And in the 39th minute, Rayados' knockout came. Corona, just like Deossa, had freedom in the three-quarters of the field and dared to move from the right. “Tecatito’s” shot went in just off the post for one of the best goals of the Club World Cup.
Inter finished off River Plate and Rayados sealed the rout
The 3-0 put Monterrey in an excellent position while they waited for the match in Seattle to move away from a stalemate. Both of Inter’s goals came late in the game.
Urawa Reds, who go home with three losses, had some dangerous runs in the second half, but it was Monterrey that scored in the 90th + 7th minute on a ball that filtered through the heart of the box before Berterame’s sweeping finish.
A goal for the Japanese club scored by Thiago Santana had been disallowed for offside in the 90th minute.
Only 14,312 spectators turned up for the Rose Bowl this time around, the lowest attendance of the tournament at the historic Pasadena stadium, but the response from the Los Angeles home crowd throughout the tournament was tremendous.
