Antonio Mohamed considers that he should have been Mexico's coach in the 2026 World Cup
The “Turk” maintains the idea that he should have taken the reins of Mexico in the World Cup. Mohamed knows the Liga MX players
The Mexican team had a good participation in the 2026 World Cup, but they fell again in the round of 16. Antonio Mohamed, champion coach with the Toluca Red Devils, believes that he should have been on the Mexican bench.
"In Mexico I have spent half a life and a half here in Argentina. But I closed the doors to Mexico because they had to choose me for this World Cup, I was a candidate, I met with everyone, but no. I am already on teams," Mohamed said in an interview with Daniel Osvaldo.
Antonio Mohamed clarified that he was not talking about the appointment of Javier Aguirre. The “Turk” mentions a moment of instability on the Mexican bench after the departure of Gerardo Martino. At that time, Diego Cocca took over the Aztec bench for a few games and then Jaime Lozano replaced him.
"Vasco Aguirre is a historic Mexican. I'm talking about the previous one because this one was now, because they were there last. But that's it, I'm already in the club," he clarified.
Among his arguments, “Turco” highlights his extensive knowledge of Mexican soccer. The Argentine strategist has commanded processes in Zacatepec, Monarcas Morelia, Jaguares de Chiapas, Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz, Xolos de Tijuana, Club América, Rayados de Monterrey, Pumas de la UNAM and the Diablos Rojos del Toluca.
"I would have liked to coach them, especially because they were local. Of the 26 called up, I had already coached 15 and I know most of them. Culturally, they are very similar to the Argentines," added the South American coach.
After the Mexican team was eliminated in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, Javier Aguirre stepped aside. The project continues as planned. Rafa Márquez is the new coach of El Tri. The “Kaiser” will have his first big challenge as a coach.
