Can the Liga MX improve? Fernando Morientes detailed the key
The former Real Madrid player believes that Mexican soccer should reach more countries. Morientes explained how the level of Liga MX can be raised.
Fernando Morientes was a great striker in Spanish soccer. The soccer player born in Caceres played for big clubs like Real Madrid and Liverpool. Morientes spoke about how Mexican soccer can improve and become a powerhouse.
A few years ago, Fernando Morientes had the opportunity to go to Liga MX, but the Spaniard rejected this possibility. Currently, many renowned soccer players are interested in playing in Mexican soccer, but not as many stars have emerged as in the MLS.
The former Spanish striker believes this is due to the lack of exposure for the Liga MX product. Mexican soccer seems unattainable in other latitudes, unlike with the MLS and its agreement with Apple TV. This is a factor that needs to be improved in Mexican football.
“That's what I meant when I said the Mexican League needs to grow. This is something like the Spanish League fifteen or twenty years ago. I work for LaLiga now, that's why I say this. And I go to Asia a lot. There you can watch LaLiga on any television, any match, even Villarreal-Espanyol. You can watch it in China, in America. That didn't happen before. What does that mean? That LaLiga worked hard to sell the rights to television channels, so it could be seen everywhere,” said Morientes.
In modern football, everything seems to come down to business. FIFA has demonstrated this with its format changes that have been successful at the Club World Cup and the expansion of quotas at the World Cup. These changes have generated more dividends for the organization. Mexican soccer should highlight these examples to strengthen its brand.
“With all of this, there are more sponsors, more brands investing, much more money for the clubs. Clubs can sign better players, and the league grows,” he added.
Fernando Morientes used the best leagues in the world as an example. Exposure is a factor that generates many future profits. Players, clubs, and the tournament organizers themselves benefit from this.
“We watch the Italian league, we watch the Premier League, we watch the Spanish league, obviously. But we don't have access to the Mexican league, which would be interesting because there are also many Spaniards playing here," concluded Fernando -Morientes.
