Canelo Álvarez “burys” his last defeat and says he is not worried about his ego
Boxer Canelo Álvarez pointed out that understanding the variables of the sport helps process results that do not fit
The professional career in boxing requires not only rigorous physical preparation, but also mental maturity to assimilate adverse results.
In this sense, the Mexican boxer Saúl Canelo Álvarez has developed a different perspective on the meaning of losing in the ring, prioritizing learning and controlling emotions over the personal pride that usually surrounds the figures of this sport.

The mental evolution compared to the fighter's ego
Self-criticism has become a key tool for the Guadalajara boxer when evaluating his performance after a failed fight. "Before, the ego got to you. You thought: 'Why did I lose? I shouldn't have lost.' You start blaming everyone. It's never your fault. That's the ego. You always blame someone other than this, that, and you never take responsibility," declared Canelo Álvarez in a conversation with Forbes Mexico magazine when addressing how his perception of defeat has changed over the years.
This psychological evolution allows the athlete to face setbacks with greater objectivity, assuming direct responsibility for what happens on the mat.
In his intervention with the aforementioned media, the boxer from Jalisco pointed out that understanding the variables of the sport helps to process the results that do not fit the initial projections of his work team.
The true meaning of being a winner
Throughout more than two decades of activity in paid boxing, Canelo Álvarez's career records only three adverse results in his history, corresponding to his confrontations against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Dmitry Bivol and Terence Crawford. Despite the media impact of these setbacks, the athlete maintains that the ability to get up after a fall is the quality that truly defines an elite athlete.
According to his statements to Forbes Mexico, resilience is the differentiating factor in the career of any athlete who aspires to stay at the top of the discipline. The fighter argued that it is in unfavorable scenarios where character is tested, separating the notion of success from the need to permanently maintain a record of victories.
The analysis of the setback against Crawford and the learning
The unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford represented the last official setback in Canelo Álvarez's career, a result that meant the loss of his championships in the super middleweight division.
Far from evading the issue, the boxer analyzed that, despite having completed a training camp without setbacks, factors such as dehydration or the tactical approach of the opposing corner influenced the final verdict of the judges.
The boxer defended that even the most detailed planning is subject to unforeseen variables that cannot be controlled once the fight begins. “It taught me that I can show other people that even by doing perfect things, training hard and doing everything right, you always get the result you expect,” concluded Canelo Álvarez when evaluating the experience acquired after his last professional presentation.
