Crawford gives Canelo a boxing class and takes him off the throne
Despite moving up two weight classes to face him, Terence Crawford completely dominates Canelo Alvarez to win by decision and make more history
The night of September 13, 2025 will go down in boxing history because a fight was watched around the world on Netflix, but above all because Terence Crawford, the almost 38-year-old American fighter, beat Canelo Alvarez.
“Bud” Crawford dominated Saul Alvarez with his superior boxing skills and came close to knocking him down in a flawless display of great boxing en route to receiving a unanimous decision to strip the Mexican of the super middleweight world championship.
Crawford (42-0) capped his tremendous career by taking the undisputed championship in a third division by scores of 116-112, 115-113, 115-113. But the fight was much more convincing than those scores indicate. Canelo (63-3-2) saw himself without any chance of successfully defending his title.
The Raiders stadium is filled with fans and celebrities
Just as the organizers imagined, Allegiant Stadium was filled with 70,482 spectators despite the fact that the cost of the tickets was very high, including prices of $ 500 dollars in upper areas of the building and over $ 1,000 in middle stands, according to the testimony of fans present.
The fight captured the attention of the general public and attracted countless celebrities such as Marc Anthony, Jeremy Renner, Charlize Theron, Sofia Vergara, Michael J. Fox, Mike Tyson and Magic Johnson, among others, bringing to mind events such as Mayweather-De la Hoya, Mayweather-Pacquiao, Pacquiao-De la Hoya and also Mayweather vs. Canelo, the latter taking place on September 14, 2013, almost exactly 12 years ago.
That Canelo was a developing star, but a fighter who wasn't yet ready to face the best pound-for-pound fighter at the time and lost handily.
Canelo, after all these years, was once again dominated from start to finish in a fight. And a little while later at the press conference the Mexican stated: "Crawford is much better than Mayweather."
Crawford dominated Canelo from the first round
Terence Crawford, who the day before weighed the same as Canelo (167.5 pounds) and who from a distance didn't look any smaller than Alvarez on fight night despite moving up two weight classes to face him, was the first to connect in a completely studious round 1 with almost no punches. But a solitary good combination from "Bud," including a good left hand, caught the crowd's attention.
Taking advantage of his longer arms, Crawford dominated the second round, using his jab, while Alvarez tried to hit the body with a good right hand to the stomach.
But with full confidence, the southpaw from Omaha looked even better in the third round, with a powerful left hand to the face, and every time the Mexican tried to mount an offensive, Crawford's venomous counterpunch immediately came back as if he were a scorpion.
The first minute of round 4 was a boxing class from Crawford, loose and precise. It wasn't until the second part of the round that Canelo appeared with a big right hand to the head and another at the end of the round after which Crawford smiled. In any case, the Guadalajara native was in trouble against a boxer superior in technique, speed and mobility.
A little frustrated, Canelo grabbed his rival and lifted him against the ropes near the end of the fifth round, while a stupefied Turki Alalshikh, the most powerful man in boxing today and the one who made the event possible, watched a few meters away sitting next to Dana White.
Canelo staggers as Crawford goes for the knockout
The middle rounds of the fight passed without Alvarez being able to find a way. He threw a whip-like left hand to Crawford's kidney area, but Crawford didn't flinch. The Mexican looked powerless.
Then came round 9. Terence Crawford, feeling he was far superior to Canelo, went all in and landed some of the best punches the Mexican has received in recent years. The man from Guadalajara held his ground with his granite jaw and tried to respond, managing to land two solid right hands to the face of "Bud," who had dared to fight in the center of the ring with a naturally larger man.
It's worth remembering that Crawford and his trainer had been convinced they were going to win the fight.
When Crawford landed another left hand to the face in round 11, Canelo reacted with a grimace that epitomized the night: a gesture of complete helplessness, as if he didn't want to continue. The American had his work cut out for him.
And he closed with another dominant round in which Canelo looked shaky. He managed to avoid the takedown, but to be completely honest, he couldn't win a single round, at least not clearly.
Fernando Vargas Jr. loses in the co-main event
