Last-placed team of the third division eliminates Real Oviedo from the Copa del Rey
Ourense CF pulled off the upset of the day by eliminating Grupo Pachuca, the team where Salomon Rondon plays
Ourense CF, bottom of Group I of the Primera Federacion, pulled off the first upset of the Copa del Rey by eliminating a lackluster Real Oviedo (4-2), in a match that went to extra time, forced by a last-gasp goal from Jelbat. The match ended in regulation time and was decided by goals from Moroccans Omar Ouhdadi and Amin Bouzaig.
The Oviedo debacle is enormous, adding to the disappointment surrounding the change in management. Veljko Paunovic's former team, now managed by Luis Carrion, played another disastrous match and was unable to hold onto their two-goal lead.
Ourense were brave from the start, but Oviedo quickly took control of the ball. Neither side posed a threat until Hugo Sanz committed a clear penalty on Hassan, who was quicker than the Galician full-back when he faced him to reach the byline. From the penalty spot, Croatian Josip Brekalo put Carrion's team ahead.
The 0-1 scoreline hurt the Galician side, who were stunned for a few minutes. Brekalo, with a left-footed shot that went wide, and Reina, after a set piece following a corner, had chances to make it 0-2 before the home coach, Dani Llacer, made a change to his starting eleven due to Punzano's injury, who was replaced by the Moroccan Omar Ouhdadi. That break seemed to benefit Ourense, who settled down. And, little by little, they began to take control of the ball. Oviedo struggled to get out of their own half. Just before the half-hour mark, the first chances for the Galician side arrived: David Munoz was inches away from connecting with a cutback from Omar; and, after the corner, Jerin's header missed the target. Ourense focused their attack down the left flank, where Hugo Sanz was causing problems for the Oviedo defense with his runs into the box. Just before halftime, Romanian goalkeeper Modovan prevented an equalizer with a spectacular save from Omar, who had tried to finish with a shot towards the far post. And in the final moments of the first half, Aranzabe came close to scoring. The script for the second half remained unchanged. Ourense continued pressing for the equalizer and found their reward with a goal from Jerin Ramos. But their joy lasted barely five minutes. Serbian Ilic finished off a great attacking move with a powerful shot. The game opened up from then on. Oviedo, too demoralized to defend their lead, had two chances to kill the tie. In the first, Fede Vinas was denied by Alberto; in the second, Agudin's shot crashed against the crossbar. Ourense also created chances, but lacked accuracy. Until, in the dying moments, after a free kick from the wing, Jelbat unleashed pandemonium at O ??Couto with his header. 2-2. A deserved reward for the Galicians. And nothing changed in stoppage time. Ourense were the ones who pushed hardest for passage to the next round. Omar, electric from the moment he came on, had already given a warning before completing the comeback with a great strike to the near post. Oviedo were already reeling, and Amin finished them off in the 113th minute from the penalty spot.
