Manchester City wins in extremis and recovers in Premier League
Manchester City climbs to second place, awaiting the result of the Arsenal vs. Chelsea match
Manchester City returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Leeds, with a goal from Phil Foden in the 90+1 minute.
Pep Guardiola's Citizens had lost 2-1 to Newcastle United last weekend and also fell 2-0 to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.
City climbs to second place in the standings, although with one more game played than Chelsea, who are in third place with 23 points, two behind the Manchester club.
Manchester City opened and closed the victory against Leeds
Manchester City started strong, taking a 1-0 lead against Leeds with a goal from Foden before the first minute of play, just 58 seconds in.
The quick 1-0 lead was followed by a 2-0 goal before the half-hour mark, when Josko Gvardiol capitalized on a poor save by Lucas Perri from a corner.
The Croatian, who was just inches from being offside, tapped the ball in from a meter out, putting City on course for a routine victory. However, the routine turned into chaos with a goal from Dominic Calvert-Lewin that reduced the deficit at the start of the second half in the 49th minute. Lewin won a penalty, which Nmecha converted. Gianluigi Donnarumma saved the penalty, but the rebound fell to the Leeds player, who made it 2-2 in the 68th minute, complicating matters for the Citizens. In stoppage time, after Omar Marmoush missed a header that would have given his team the victory, the Englishman took on the pressure of collecting the ball inside the area. Phil Foden drove forward until he saw the gap to beat Perri and become Saturday's hero in Manchester, securing three points and keeping them as close as possible to league leaders Arsenal. Mikel Arteta's Arsenal will face Chelsea this Sunday in a match that could tighten the race for first place or see the Gunners pull away.
