Matías Almeyda returns to Mexico, but with Rayados de Monterrey
Goodbye to the Chivas dream. Matías Almeyda was officially announced as the new coach of Rayados de Monterrey
Matías Almeyda returns to Liga MX. Chivas de Guadalajara searched for “Pelado” for many years, but it was Rayados de Monterrey, the club that made his return possible. The royal team hits the table with the hiring of a coach who has left a mark on Mexican soccer.
Rayados de Monterrey took a big step towards Apertura 2026. The Mexican team hired Matías Almeyda to be part of a two-season process.
“The Monterrey Soccer Club informs that it has reached an agreement with the Argentine coach Matías Almeyda to assume the technical direction of the men's first team, with a two-year contract,” the club wrote in its statement.
Matías Almeyda comes from two trials in Europe. “Pelado” coached AEK Athens and also Sevilla in Spain's first division. His time with the Spanish team was not the best. Almeyda left a balance of 10 wins, 7 draws and 15 losses in 32 games coached.
“Matías is a coach recognized for his human quality, empathy and leadership, who has a defined and coherent game model that he implements on the field with demand and conviction,” the club added in the announcement.
Matías Almeyda in the MX League
The Argentine strategist has a memorable time in Mexican soccer. In September 2015, Matías Almeyda took over the reins of Chivas de Guadalajara from Banfield. “El Pelado” led the Sacred Flock for two and a half years.
Matías Almeyda directed 147 games with Chivas. The former Argentine soccer player left a balance of 64 wins, 40 draws and 43 losses. “Pelado” won 5 titles: the Copa MX Apertura 2015, the Supercopa MX 2016, the Copa MX Clausura 2017, the Liga MX championship of the same tournament (Clausura 2017) and the Concacaf Champions League in 2018.
“With his leadership, Almeyda will seek to lead Rayados to compete at the highest level and achieve the maximum sporting results that our fans expect and deserve,” the statement concludes.
