Matthew Stafford strengthens MVP candidacy after Rams' rout of the Buccaneers
The Rams reached their ninth victory and Matthew Stafford reached 30 TD passes this season, leading the NFL
The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 34-7 with another great performance by Matthew Stafford.
The Rams quarterback finished with three touchdown passes and completed 25 of 35 attempts. He finished with 273 yards and reached 30 touchdown passes this season. He is the first NFL QB to reach 30 or more TD passes this season. Jared Goff and Dak Prescott are tied for second place with 23 touchdown passes this year. “There was a great atmosphere today,” Stafford said. “Our fans did a great job showing up. Obviously, both teams gave them reasons to celebrate early on and often, which was great.” Furthermore, Stafford polished his MVP credentials with another stellar performance in McVay's offense. The QB extended his streak to 308 consecutive pass attempts without an interception, only the eighth such streak in the NFL with at least 300 attempts in the 21st century. Matthew Stafford wasn't the only one who shone for the Rams. Puka Nacua had seven receptions for 97 yards, while Davante Adams increased his NFL lead to 12 touchdown receptions, including nine in the Rams' last five games.
New kicker Harrison Mevis also made his first two NFL field goals.
“He’s playing like the league’s MVP,” Adams said of Stafford.
Jared Verse and Kobie Turner each had two sacks for a defense that allowed only 193 yards as the Rams edged out defending champion Philadelphia (8-3) for the top seed with six games remaining.
The Rams finish with a record of nine wins and two losses. The Los Angeles team will travel to Bank of America Stadium to play the 6-5 Carolina Panthers.
