Moisés Muñoz described América's season as a “failure”
The former Mexican goalkeeper believes that Club América should only aspire to the title. Muñoz promotes changes in the Azulcrema team's squad to compete
The Águilas del América had a complex season. The first half of 2026 was not how they planned within the azulcrema team. Moisés Muñoz, former América goalkeeper, questioned the club's season and called its campaign a “failure.”
The former goalkeeper of the Mexican national team has an implanted “big team” mentality. Moisés Muñoz considers that any result that does not end in a title is a failure. In this sense, the azulcremas failed twice in the season.
"It was not the tournament we wanted for América. In this club the requirement is to become champion tournament after tournament. If the championship is not achieved, it is a failure and all of us American fans know that," said Muñoz in statements compiled by Récord.
For the Clausura 2026 of Liga MX, the Águilas del América moved to the Liguilla in the last place that granted tickets to that instance. The azulcremas finished the regular round in 8th place. But América fell to the first step of the next round. André Jardine and his team did not go beyond a draw (6-6 on aggregate), and were eliminated from the tournament in the quarterfinals.
At the international level the result was no different. Within the framework of the Concacaf Champions League, the Águilas del América were eliminated in the quarterfinals at the hands of Nashville SC. The American team achieved a 0-1 victory in the “Nido” that gave them a place in the semifinals (0-1 on aggregate).
Renew the template
Moisés Muñoz believes that the current bad situation of the azulcrema team can be reversed with investments in the squad. The former Mexican goalkeeper remains confident and optimistic about Apertura 2026. Muñoz believes that América will once again be a competitive club.
"I am sure that for the next tournament the positions where required will be strengthened and the team will have a better face. America will continue to be the protagonist as it has been for many years," he added.
