Spain suffers the severe loss of Nico Williams, injured by the Uruguayan De La Cruz
Nico Williams left open the possibility of participating in the World Cup again if Spain advances
Spain's classification to the next round of the 2026 World Cup was accompanied by news that generated concern within the team's concentration: Nico Williams suffered a muscle injury in the right adductor and his continuity in the tournament will depend on the evolution over the next few days.
The Athletic Club winger ended up physically affected after the duel against Uruguay and this Saturday he underwent medical tests in Chattanooga, the city where the Spanish team works during the competition.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation confirmed the diagnosis through an official statement. “Nico Williams suffers a muscle injury to the right adductor after a strong trauma caused by a tackle in the match against Uruguay,” the organization reported.
The medical report did not completely close the door to a possible reappearance. As explained by the federation, the injury was classified as moderate and the recovery time will depend on the development of the clinical picture and Spain's path in the championship.
Nico's message and the hope of returning to the tournament
Hours after learning the extent of the injury, the footballer published a message on social networks in which he shared the emotional impact of the moment and recalled the long physical process he went through in recent months.
"Today is one of the worst days of my life. I am injured again after a very complicated year, in which pubalgia won me many battles, but not the war. I managed to overcome it with work, sacrifice and, above all, responsibility," he wrote.
Williams explained that he lived for more than a year with constant limitations off the field of play. "It was a year and a half of suffering, sadness, uncertainty and anxiety. I didn't know when I would play again without pain or when I would regain a normal life. I came to live with pain in things as simple as going to the bathroom, getting in and out of the car or simply enjoying everyday life."
He also recalled that, when he had managed to recover positive sensations, he once again suffered another physical setback. "Being happy again playing football was my biggest priority, along with recovering my smile. Because without a smile, without enjoying and without being happy, I cannot perform at the highest level. I overcame it. Then an injury to my hamstring appeared, which tested me again. Once again I stopped smiling, but I wasn't going to stop either."
The Spanish international also referred directly to the action that caused the injury during the match against Uruguay.
"Yesterday they caused me a new injury after an action in which a colleague acted out of frustration, discontent and sadness for the situation he was going through. It was a move that, in my opinion, could have been avoided because it was completely unnecessary."
Despite the blow received, the winger left open the possibility of playing again in this World Cup.
"But this is not going to stop me either. I know that God has a plan for me and I will continue fighting until the last moment to return to doing what I love most: playing football, being happy and giving a lot of joy. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone for your messages of support. The story is not over, we will see you as soon as possible at this World Cup," he concluded.
