Marcelo Bielsa and his anger after Uruguay's elimination from the 2026 World Cup
After losing against Spain, Marcelo Bielsa was visibly affected by the result. Bielsa showed his face
The Uruguayan team was eliminated in the first round of the 2026 World Cup. The “Charrúa” team could not overcome Group G, a sector in which it shared with the teams of Spain, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia. Marcelo Bielsa did not hide his frustration.
After the 1-0 defeat against Spain, elimination was already mathematical. “El Loco” went to offer statements before entering the locker room and, out of desperation in the midst of the Uruguayan fall, he yelled at the journalists to speed up the round of questions.
Now calmer, Marcelo Bielsa took responsibility for Uruguay's elimination from the 2026 World Cup. This ignored a new error by Fernando Muslera that gave the Spanish team victory.
"No one is willing to listen to any explanation and it is natural that it should be so. To put all the disappointment generated by the work I did on me, who is responsible... it is good that it is so," declared the Argentine strategist.
The Uruguayan team showed very little football during its time at the 2026 World Cup. The South Americans drew 1-1 with Saudi Arabia, then tied again 2-2 with Cape Verde and ended up losing to the group leader, Spain.
“I was not able, beyond work, effort and dedication, to transform the group of players I had into a force that did not have to explain why what happened happened,” he added.
Uruguay process to the trash
In May 2023, Marcelo Bielsa took over the reins of the Uruguay national team. The Argentine strategist led the “Charrúas” for 36 games. However, in all this time of the process the “Loco” assured that he does not leave anything for Uruguayan football.
"What I leave for Uruguayan football is nothing. Any contribution that a coach can make to football in the country in which he works for three years is never established if he does not achieve results. It was a step that left nothing," he stated.
Uruguay returns home without a single victory. The South American team is the first Conmebol team to be left out of the round of 32. Cape Verde took the place of the “Charrúas” in the next round of the World Cup.
