The legendary Pedro opens the doors to retirement
The former Barcelona striker plays for Lazio. After four seasons at the club, Pedro spoke about retirement. The Spaniard did not abandon Europe in his seniority
The Spanish winger Pedro Rodriguez, Lazio with a contract until 2026, left the door open this Saturday to his retirement at the end of the current season, but not before “enjoying every moment” with his team, where he accepts his status as a substitute.
“I don't know if it will be my last year, but I want to enjoy every moment here. haven't thought about anything for the future, "I'll want to rest for the first year, build a different life, and be with my family and children in Barcelona, ????something I've been able to do very little since my divorce," he said in an interview with DAZN.
"Afterwards, probably something football-related. I don't know if as a coach or something else. I don't like sitting at home staring at the ceiling: I'll do something, but I haven't thought about what yet," he added.
At 38, and although he was instrumental last season, he's already assuming his role as a substitute in Maurizio Sarri's team.
“It's not easy to manage some moments of the season, especially when you're in a good moment, scoring goals and providing assists. But you have to mentally accept the role of a substitute to always help the team and work to give your all during the 30-35 minutes you have at your disposal,” he explained.
“Recovery is important: I'm no longer 20 or 25 years old. Rest is fundamental, as is nutrition, but speaking with the coach and the fitness trainers, everything can be managed. Other active players, like Modric, are also doing it. It's good for Serie A to have people like him arrive," he added.
Lazio host Roma this Sunday in the most important match in the Italian capital.
“We started badly, but we have a great opportunity in the derby to get going again. The derby is a different kind of match, not only for the players, but also for the fans and the city. They are special matches that I love playing. Here the The derby is lived with more passion and intensity. People have been talking about it for weeks, people stop you on the street and give you advice...," he commented.
The Canary Islander, World and European champion with the Spanish national team and winner of all the major club titles with Barcelona and Chelsea, arrived at Lazio in the 2021-2022 season from Roma and, since then, has played 179 official matches and scored 34 goals.
The striker, who renewed his contract in June 2025 until the same month of 2026, had one of his best recent seasons last season, with 10 goals in Serie A and 4 in the Europa League, his best tally since the 2013-2014 campaign, when he scored 15 with Barcelona.
