Tragedy in the NBA: Brandon Clarke, of the Grizzlies,dies at 29 years old
Brandon Clarke came to the NBA in 2019 and last played in late 2025 when he suffered an injury.
The Memphis Grizzlies organization confirmed this Tuesday the death of power forward Brandon Clarke, who was 29 years old and fit ba part of the team since 2019. The news was confirmed by his agency, Priority Sports, as well as by the NBA itself.
Neither the team nor its representatives offered details about the place, time or causes of the player's death, one of the longest-serving pieces on the Memphis roster in recent years, according to an AP report.
The Grizzlies mourned the player's loss and highlighted his legacy on and off the court. “an even better person, whose impact on the Memphis organization and community will not be forgotten. We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
The agency that represented the player also posted a message on social networks. “We are devastated beyond words,” expressed Priority Sports. “It was very loved by all of us here and by everyone whose lives he touched. He was the gentle soul and always was the first to be there for his friends and his family.”
A career marked by Memphis and injuries
Clarke came to the NBA after being selected 21st in the 2019 Draft by Oklahoma City Thunder, although his rights were immediately traded to Memphis, a franchise that in that same draw also chose Ja Morant with the second overall pick.
Coming from Gonzaga Bulldogs, Clarke quickly integrated into the young core of the Grizzlies and in 2020 was included in the all-rookie team along with Morant. In October 2022 he signed a multi-year extension with the franchise.
During his seven seasons in Memphis, he averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. However, injuries marked a good part of his last years. On March 3, 2023,he suffered a torn hamstring tendon iles left in a duel against Denver Nuggets, an injury that affected his continuity. In the last three campaigns he was only able to play 72 of 246 possible matches, including just two in the current season.
Previous investigation and reconstruction of the team
Clarke's death occurs in the middle of a reconstruction stage for the Grizzlies, who closed the campaign with a 25-57 record after getting rid of figures like Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. during the last year.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also expressed his condolences. “We are devastated to learn of Brandon Clarke's passing. "As one of the longest-serving members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and a leader who played with enormous passion and dedication."
The National Basketball Players'Association added: “This is an unbelievable loss for the brotherhood. We will remember Brandon not alone for the immense joy that he brought to so many during his career, but for the genuine friendships that he built far beyond basketball.”
On April 1 Clarke had been arrested in Arkansas for speeding and possession of a controlled substance which was reported kratom. He was released on bail the next day.
