Wednesday's test involved five Liquid Apogee Motors (LAM) (normal rocket engines) each with 440 Newton thrust and 16 Reaction Control System (RCS) thrusters with 100 Newton thrust each, the national space agency said in a statement.

According to ISRO, the goal of the Gaganyaan project is to put three astronauts into orbit at an altitude of 400 kilometers for three days and then land them in the sea within India's maritime boundary to demonstrate the capability of sending humans into space.

The service module of Gaganyaan is a two-propellant-based propulsion system that meets the criteria for an orbit module, capable of lifting it into orbit, rotating it in orbit, controlling it to stay in orbit, etc., the statement said. According to the statement, the LAM engines with 440 Newton thrust will be the main propulsion force as the vehicle moves into orbit while the RCS thrusters are capable of correcting any displacement in the vehicle.

ISRO Chairman S Somnath said last month that India's first manned space mission 'Gaganyaan' would be launched by the end of August, while the unmanned mission would launch next year. On the sidelines of an event at the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Somnath had said that for the Gaganyaan mission, we have made a new rocket which is ready in Sriharikota. Work has begun on the integration of the Crew Module and Crew Escape System. I am told that by the end of this month this work will be completed and all the tests will be done.

An 'unmanned mission in orbit' as part of the project will take place early next year. By early 2024, we will have an unmanned mission to orbit and bring it back safely, which will be the third mission. At present we have set these three missions.

Somnath had said, the safety of the crew members of Gaganyaan is most important. For this we are doing two additional things. First, the Crew Escape System and second, the Integrated Vehicle Health Management System. Crew escape is a traditional engineering solution, with computer detection. Whereas, the second system is more intelligent which takes decisions on board without human intervention.
