Americans will leave travel in record numbers on Independence Day
More than 72 million Americans are expected to travel this July 4th, setting a new record, according to AAA’s 2025 forecast
The holidays are approaching. While we wait, we have a little taste of this coming July 4th, Independence Day of the United States. If you are one of those who plans to go out that day to take advantage of the weekend, we tell you that you are not alone. The number of people traveling across the country is expected to reach record levels.
This July 4th, Americans will celebrate the country's 249th birthday with unprecedented mobility. According to the most recent forecast released by the American Automobile Association (AAA), more than 72.2 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from their homes during the holiday period. This number represents a new national record for the Independence Day season.
The report considers a date range from Saturday, June 28 to Sunday, July 6. This year, the projected increase is 1.7 million travelers compared to 2024, and more than seven million compared to 2019, the year before the pandemic.
Truck transportation will be the preferred option for most. It is estimated that more than 60 million people will travel by car, representing a 2.2% increase over the previous year. This growth reflects the strong interest in family and local travel, typical of summer in the United States.
In addition, approximately 8% of travelers, or approximately 5.84 million people, will take flights to reach their destinations. This mode of travel is also experiencing significant demand, driven by the extended weekend thanks to the holiday falling on a Friday.
Approximately 4.78 million citizens will opt for other modes of transportation, including trains, buses, or cruises. This variety in transportation modes indicates a diversification in the way Americans plan to spend their vacations.
"Summer is one of the busiest travel seasons of the year," said Stacey Barber, vice president of travel for AAA, in a press release.“After the record-breaking Memorial Day forecast, AAA is seeing strong demand for road and air travel during Independence Day week.”
This number of people traveling across the United States was already expected, after some 45.1 million Americans traveled at least 50 miles from their homes during the long Memorial Day weekend.
“With the holiday falling on a Friday, travelers have the option to make it a long weekend or take the entire week off to make memories with family and friends,” Barber said.
And what good does this know? With so many people traveling by different modes of transportation, it’s essential to plan ahead because you’re likely to find congested roads, airports, and transit stations. We don’t want to ruin your trip from the start.
