Boy, 4, drowned in an Ohio lake because his mother threw him in to deliver him to God
The boy mother was in a clear mental crisis and told authorities she had given her son to God
A 4-year-old Amish boy who was thrown into an Ohio lake to be "delivered" to God drowned along with his father, who swam out to the water, according to authorities.
The deaths of Vincent Miller, 4, and his father, Marcus Miller, 45, both of Millersburg, part of Ohio’s Amish country, was preceded by a “spiritual delirium,” Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell said, according to Fox 8. The boy’s mother was in a “clear mental crisis” and told authorities she had “given her son to God” by throwing him into Lake Atwood. Divers recovered the 4-year-old boy’s body Saturday and his father’s body Sunday. Campbell said the father is believed to have swum into the lake alone to test his faith.
Authorities discovered the boy and father's deaths after the family's mother drove a golf cart with three of her children from a dock into the lake.
All three children, a 15-year-old girl and 18-year-old twins, managed to get out of the water safely.
However, responding authorities soon became concerned for the safety of a 4-year-old son and the woman's husband, who could not be located, the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office wrote in a statement.
“After assisting the woman out of the water, she made troubling statements about conversing with God,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the family's father was seen by witnesses at another dock around 1 a.m.
The cause and manner of death for both the boy and The boy's father's remains are pending autopsies, said Tuscarawas County Coroner Dr. Jeff Cameron.
The boy's mother, a 40-year-old woman, is expected to be charged with aggravated homicide. She is currently hospitalized for mental health issues, while her three other children are with relatives.
