Hamas accepts agreement for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip
According to negotiators in Egypt, US mediation is expected for Israel to agree to halt attacks for 60 days and release ten hostages
Hamas, a terrorist organization according to the United States and the European Union, approved the proposed agreement for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the exchange of hostages Israelis for Palestinian prisoners, an Egyptian security source briefed on the negotiations told EFE and AFP on Monday.
According to this same source, Hamas' approval came after a joint meeting between Egyptian and Qatari mediators with the leaders of its delegation present in Egypt. According to the source, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, after Hamas approves the proposal, "it will be communicated to the Israeli government through Washington to pressure Israel to accept it and stop the military operation in Gaza City."
Conditions of an eventual agreement
The proposal includes freezing its military activities in the Gaza Strip, a 60-day ceasefire in exchange for Hamas releasing 10 Israeli hostages, and the massive entry of humanitarian aid into the enclave to alleviate the humanitarian crisis facing the Gazan population.
According to the source, Hamas accepted the deployment of a joint European and Arab forces in the Gaza Strip to ensure the implementation of the truce and maintain security in the enclave, with the aim of avoiding "any security vacuum resulting from Hamas's arms freeze." He also indicated that the Palestinian movement agreed not to administer the Strip once the ceasefire and the implementation of each of the points of the truce agreement were in effect, as long as they were not violated by Israel.
