JD Vance trips generate controversy in networks and protests in headquarters
Vance trips have been a mix of meetings with officials, speeches promoting U.S. policy, and family outings at tourist sites
Upon his return to the White House, Donald Trump chose Ohio Senator JD Vance as his vice president, and in seven months of government, he has become an increasingly important player in the world of Make America Great Again politics. accompanies the current president's agenda.
For many, Vance is already one of the most controversial political figures in the country, known for his extremist and conservative vision of American society, in addition to his anti-immigrant speech, however, his recent visit to US troops during a high-risk trip to the United Kingdom before the meeting of Trump and Putin generated controversy on networks due to his constant outings, many of them with his family.
Although part of the controversy is related to the expenses and objectives of his trips, described by some users as a waste of public resources, so far there is no evidence of such a situation, however, in parallel, many of his trips have been accompanied by demonstrations.
In his first appearance on the world stage in February, Vance promoted Trump's "America first" message at an artificial intelligence summit in Paris and spoke about maintaining U.S. dominance in the growing industry. From there, he headed to a security conference in Munich, where he stunned his audience with his comments about democracy and his scant attention to Russia's war in Ukraine.
A month later, he visited Greenland, chiding Denmark for not investing more in its territory's security and demanding a new approach. He also made time to attend cultural events with his family, including a popular annual dog sled race.
Also in March, however, JD Vance's family vacation was marred by protests when demonstrators lined a Vermont road the vice president was due to use following a heated exchange between him and President Trump with Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.
The pressure was such that Vance was forced to urgently move his family to a secret location , due to the threat of dozens of people demanding the stance against the Ukrainian president.
In April, the US vice president met with the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, to negotiate a bilateral trade agreement with Washington and strengthen ties with the Trump administration.
During his stay, the politician traveled with his family to Agra, the city where the famous Taj Mahal is located, thus, his visit with a marked personal nature, took place in an international framework dominated by the trade war between the US and its trading partners.
By May, Vance extended an invitation to Pope Leo XIV to visit the United States during a meeting at the Vatican.
However, the visit was framed by the background of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who before becoming pontiff, openly criticized the Trump administration's stance against the immigrant community.
Two months later, Vance was met with protests during his family visit to Disneyland, when dozens of demonstrators gathered outside the theme park in Anaheim to express their rejection of immigration raids in California.
Vance visited the park with his wife, Usha, and their two children, so his presence sparked a mobilization of more than 100 people, who booed him and carried signs with messages against immigration raids. The protest also spread to the Grand Californian Hotel, where the family was staying.
Just weeks later, the vice president visited Nantucket, Massachusetts, to attend a Republican National Committee fundraising event, prompting a heavy security presence and protests on the island.
The protest, heavily promoted by the Instagram account catsonacouch, aimed to disrupt Vance's visit and mock him using cat memes and references, relating to his campaign comments, where he criticized cat owners who don't have children and, as an example, named Kamala Harris.
In August, controversy again marred a trip by the Republican politician, after the vice president's security detail raised the level of a river in Ohio for a kayaking trip he and his family took to celebrate his 41st birthday.
The U.S. Secret Service said it requested an increase in water flow for the Little Miami River to ensure motorized watercraft and emergency personnel could operate safely while protecting the vice president.
Finally, earlier this week, Vance visited the United Kingdom, where in addition to scheduling meetings with several British political leaders, he made time for outdoor activities.
The politician was criticized for fishing in a private lake with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy during the official trip, which caused complaints from some locals, especially due to the reinforced security measures, including police actions and checkpoints.
