In a startling revelation, a man admitted in court to the theft of a toilet crafted entirely from 18 carat gold, valued at over $6 million (?? 50,05,58,100.00). As per a report by CNN, the accused confessed to committing the heist at the opulent residence where former UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill was born.
James Sheen, aged 39, pleaded guilty at Oxford Crown Court on Tuesday to charges of theft, converting or transferring criminal property, and conspiracy to do so.
The stolen toilet, an extravagant creation by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, was installed at Blenheim Palace in 2019 as part of an exhibition titled 'Victory is not an Option'. Positioned adjacent to the room marking Churchill's birth, the gilded commode was a significant attraction.
Theft of ‘America’ in 2019
The unique artwork dubbed 'America' was pilfered in September 2019, mere days after the commencement of the exhibition.
'America' initially garnered attention during its display at the Guggenheim in New York City in 2016. It resurfaced in headlines in 2017 when the White House, under then-President Donald Trump, sought to borrow Vincent van Gogh's painting 'Landscape with Snow' from the museum, only to be offered Cattelan's golden toilet instead.
Reflecting on his creation, Cattelan remarked to The New Yorker, 'Whatever you eat, a two-hundred-dollar lunch or a two-dollar hot dog, the result is the same for the toilet.' He characterized the artwork as '1% art for the 99%'.
Virtual Court Appearance
Appearing via video link from Five Wells Prison, where he is currently serving a 17-year term for various theft offenses, Sheen admitted to his involvement in the gold toilet theft. Among his previous crimes were the theft of a tractor and valuable trophies from the National Horse Racing Museum in Newmarket. Sheen's estimated net worth stands at £400,000 ($503,000).
In November, three additional individuals were charged in connection with the toilet theft, though they have all denied the allegations. Their trial is scheduled for February next year.
