Of raids to census undocumented in the look

Donald Trump anti-immigrant crusade is not limited to raids and deportations. The obsession with this sector is such that it wants to literally wipe them off the map by proposing, once again, that they not be counted in the next 2030 Census.

And the common denominator of the extremist proposals and public policies of the Trump administration are always immigrants, the scapegoats for all the evils: the fentanyl crisis, "electoral fraud," and, above all, crime.

It is a constant war that, although directed towards undocumented immigrants, affects all communities of color.

For example, if anything is evident from the plan of Trump and the government of Texas to advance the Census five years to redistribute electoral districts to their convenience, it is its discriminatory, even racist nature, by depriving Latino and African-American voters of political power. It's a frontal attack on civil rights.

Redistricting continues to become more complicated as Democratic governors are applying the "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" approach. If Republicans present tortured electoral maps to take seats away from Democrats and guarantee their majority in the House, Democrats will present their own options.

Immersed in this process is the war that Trump is waging against undocumented immigrants and communities of color, based on the "Great Replacement" conspiracy theory used by white supremacists to claim that non-citizens vote fraudulently in elections. But a 1996 federal law already expressly prohibits them from voting in federal elections. Those who do so face severe penalties, including fines, prison (or both), inadmissibility, and even deportation.

For Trump, this is not enough. Now he even says he will sign an executive order to eliminate mail-in voting because it lends itself to "fraud" and he wants to "help bring HONESTY to the 2026 midterm elections." This comes from someone who tried to prevent the certification of Joe Biden's legitimate victory in the 2020 election with fraud, lies, and an assault on the Capitol.

And as Trump seeks to complete what he left unfinished when he lost the elections in 2020, he is once again turning his guns on undocumented immigrants so that they are not counted in the 2030 Census.

Trump already tried this when he insisted that the 2020 Census include a question about citizenship, aware that this would cause undocumented people or even their resident or citizen relatives to not participate in the decennial count, resulting in an undercount in jurisdictions with high concentrations of minorities, especially Hispanics. Thus, when district lines are drawn and the number of seats determined, non-Hispanic whites would benefit the most, and, in addition, Republicans would benefit more than Democrats.

Census results determine how billions of dollars in federal funds are distributed to states and localities for a host of issues and projects, from schools and Medicaid to public services and infrastructure. And it also determines how many seats each state receives in the House of Representatives.

That is, the count must be as accurate as possible so that jurisdictions receive the federal funds they are entitled to and obtain seats in the House based on how many people reside there, whether or not they are U.S. citizens. The Constitution requires that all people be counted, regardless of their immigration status.

The Supreme Court stopped the inclusion of the citizenship question on the 2020 Census by sending the case back to lower courts. The question is what will happen this time if Trump tries again.

And although the Constitution assigns to Congress, not the president, the responsibility of overseeing the decennial count, Trump manipulates Congress to his liking.

What is clear is that from raids to the Census, undocumented immigrants are constantly in Trump's sights.
