Shooting in a school in Austria leaves at least 10 dead
A high school in Austria was the scene of a massacre when a young man, apparently a former student of the school, killed several people and then turned the gun on himself.
Several people lost their lives after a shooting at a school in Austria. Police responded to the attack on BORG Dreischützengasse in Graz at around 10:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday, local public broadcaster ORF reported. According to the Austrian Press Agency (APA), 10 people were killed in the attack, most of them students, as well as one adult and the suspected shooter. Following the news, police shared new updates on social media, announcing that there had been “several deaths” and asking members of the public to stay away from the area. They also confirmed that a meeting point had been set up for the students’ parents at the city’s ASKÖ stadium, and another post indicated that the students and their parents were receiving support from the crisis intervention team. ORF said the suspected shooter is believed to have committed suicide, citing police spokesperson Fritz Grundnig. The school that was attacked is the Dreierschützengasse secondary school in the Lend district. Several local media outlets, without citing official sources, reported that the attacker was a former student who was now 22 years old and was in possession of a pistol and a shotgun. According to local outlet Die Presse, a "major police operation" has been launched. Officers stated that the school had been secured, insisting that there was no further danger. Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker called the incident a national tragedy that has deeply shocked the country. "This inconceivable act has suddenly torn young people from the life they had in front of them. There are no words for the pain and sorrow that all of us, all of Austria, feel at this moment," he said.
