The Dodgers announced they will donate $1 million to immigrant families affected by the ICE raids in Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Dodgers have pledged to donate one million dollars to directly help the families of immigrants affected by the ICE raids, in coordination with the government of Los Angeles.
“What is happening in Los Angeles has resonated with thousands upon thousands of people, and we have heard the call for us to take a leadership role on behalf of those affected,” team president Stan Kasten said in a statement to La Opinion.
“We believe that by dedicating resources and taking action, we will continue to support and uplift the communities of the greater Los Angeles area,” Kasten said.
After days of growing calls for the team to address the unrest that has gripped the city over the past two weeks, pressure on the Dodgers intensified with a plea on Friday.
The petition, organized by the faith-based community network PICO California, came one day after the Dodgers initially postponed announcing financial assistance.
“This is the moment for the Dodgers to stand with the families that masked officers are tearing apart,” said the letter, signed by faith officials, union leaders, and immigrant rights activists and addressed to Dodgers owner Mark Walter.
The club decided to delay its announcement after immigration agents showed up at Dodger Stadium Thursday morning, attempting to gain access to the stadium's parking lots, apparently intending to use them as a processing center for people arrested in a nearby immigration raid.
The Dodgers denied the agents entry, according to the team, but postponed their announcement until Friday afternoon, when they detailed that their $1 million in financial resources will be obtained in collaboration with the City of Los Angeles.
“The Dodgers and the City of Los Angeles have demonstrated their ability to provide financial resources to those in desperate need,” as recently seen in their efforts to assist victims of the January wildfires,” the Dodgers stated. “Through our support of the city's efforts, the Dodgers will encourage organizations in a similar situation to use their resources to directly support families and workers who suffered have economic hardship.”
“I want to thank the Dodgers for leading this action in support of the immigrant community in Los Angeles,” said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. "These past few weeks have caused great fear in every neighborhood of our community and have had a direct impact on our economy. My message to all Angelenos is clear: we will stand together during this time and we will not turn our backs on each other that is why Los Angeles is the greatest city in the world."
