Trump Alist Deployment of the National Guard in Washington
President Trump says he wants to make the capital great again, so he seeks to remove people living on the streets and increase patrols
President Donald Trump is moving forward with his plan to deploy hundreds of National Guard members to Washington, DC, under the argument of reducing crime, but after launching a message against the homeless.
"I will make our capital great again!" The president wrote this morning on his Truth Social platform. The president confirmed his actions at a White House press conference.
National Guard troops would support law enforcement in patrolling, the president confirmed.
“Today is Liberation Day in Washington DC and we are taking back our capital,” Trump said. “[We will] be deploying the National Guard to help restore law and order and security to Washington DC.”
Trump is considering deploying up to 1,000 National Guard troops to the nation's capital.
“The homeless need to leave IMMEDIATELY,” Trump tweeted Sunday. "We'll give them shelter, but away from the capital. Criminals don't have to leave. We'll put them in jail where they belong."
Unlike in the states, President Trump doesn't need to get approval from local authorities to act in the US capital.
The president has used members of the military for various tasks, including militarizing the border and supporting operations against undocumented immigrants in Los Angeles, California.
