'Accountability Will Not Be Achieved in Silence'
Orange County social justice organizations joined weekend protests.
The social justice group Centro CSO OC held a peaceful vigil Friday afternoon in front of the federal building in downtown Santa Ana. The event aimed to express discontent over the lives lost at the hands of immigration agents, as well as the murder of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis.
“Accountability will not be achieved by remaining silence, so we must take to the streets “We take to the streets to demand justice and accountability when our own government commits crimes against the community,” he said Rain, an organizer with CSO OC. The demonstration outside the building that houses the local ICE offices in Santa Ana was the second protest organized in the county this week. It was part of a broader wave of nationwide protests against immigration enforcement measures, sparked by the fatal shooting of a mother of three in Minneapolis, in which a federal agent was involved, and another shooting in Portland the following day, also involving a federal agent, which left two people wounded. “These federal agents are out here abusing and killing our people, not just in Minneapolis, but also in Santa Ana,” Rain said. “They mistreated Narciso Barranco, and just last week, they unjustly arrested another elderly man, handcuffing him so tightly they couldn't remove the cuffs, which caused injuries to his arms.” A little over 400 community members and organizers marched from the Federal Center along Flower Street, First Street, and Broadway, occupying all lanes of traffic and receiving support from passersby. Rain told the CSO OC group learned of Good's death from the Legalization For All (L4A) team, who texted them the news. “Even before it was on the news, a group present said that officers had shot someone,” she said by phone. “You have to understand that we are all observers, community watchdogs, so we wanted to show our solidarity with the L4A members and hold a local demonstration.” A second protest and one injury. A second protest began that same evening, just as the CSO OC event was ending peacefully. ABC 7 released a video that has circulated on social media showing Department of Homeland Security agents charging into the crowd. "It was an independent group that wasn't with us. We dispersed, and our event ended well. But the group that confronted the DHS agents later that night wasn't ours,"the organizer clarified. The video shows agents advancing toward the protesters and, at one point, firing what appeared to be pepper spray projectiles. It also shows several agents restraining a protester carrying a megaphone before shooting another person in the face with a rubber bullet. You can see the young man begin to bleed from his face as he is dragged away by an officer.
“We have seen the videos circulating on social media and want to make it clear that, while we do not identify with the other group, we do not condone the violent actions of the Santa Ana police or other officers against those who are protesting," Rain said.
Some people on social media identified one of the arrested protesters as Skye Jones and protested the next day outside the Santa Ana jail. The CSO OC group says that, while things can always escalate during a protest, they don't want people to forget why they are protesting.
The next protest is scheduled for Tuesday, January 13, and the location will be announced on their social media. medium.
“I would say don't give in to despair; we, the people, have a lot of power to change things,” Rain said. “I encourage people to get involved in organizations active in their communities, because together we can move mountains; we must not forget that we are fighting for our lives."At one point, they fire what appear to be pepper spray projectiles.
