The United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) carried out a drone attack last week against a port facility in Venezuela, in what constitutes the first known US operation inside the country, according to The New York Times.

Sources speaking on condition of anonymity revealed to the newspaper that the attack targeted a dock that US officials believe was used by the transnational gang Tren de Aragua to store narcotics and prepare them for transport by boat.

They also detailed that there were no people at the site at the time of the impact, so there were no fatalities.

Regarding this version, CNN consulted sources linked to the matter, who commented that US Special Operations Forces provided intelligence support for the operation.

In this regard, Colonel Allie Weiskopf, spokeswoman for the US Special Operations Command, denied it, saying: Special Operations did not support this operation, including intelligence support.

US President Donald Trump appeared to acknowledge the attack for the first time in an interview, although he offered few details.

The Pentagon has deployed MQ-9 Reaper drones in the region as part of that strategy, added The New York Times.

This operation could significantly escalate tensions between the US and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who has been pressured to resign through an aggressive military campaign.
