FEMA coordinates with states ahead of the impact of a winter storm
FEMA is working with states to prepare for a winter storm amid warnings of heavy snow, extreme temperatures, and freezing temperatures
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reported that it is coordinating with states on preparedness and response actions for the severe winter storm that will affect much of the United States this weekend, with heavy snow, freezing rain, dangerous winds, and extremely low temperatures.
In this regard, the Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem provided an update to governors and state emergency management directors on federal preparations, emphasizing that the government has already activated multiple response mechanisms to address potential impacts on infrastructure, energy, and transportation.
FEMA Activates Response Centers and Deploys Teams
According to Noem, FEMA activated its National Response Coordination Center, as well as regional centers in Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, to synchronize federal preparedness and interagency coordination.
In addition, FEMA personnel were directly integrated into state Emergency Operations Centers to ensure real-time communication with local authorities.
Direct Support to Several States
The agency has already deployed Incident Management Teams in Louisiana, Texas, and Virginia, and has 12 additional teams ready to mobilize if requested by states. Additionally, 28 Urban Search and Rescue teams remain on alert for potential emergencies. Regarding supplies, Noem indicated that FEMA has the following at its distribution centers in the South and East of the country: Strategic supply sites are also being established in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Texas to expedite aid delivery if the situation requires it.
