Adriano Espaillat was defeated in the New York House of Representatives primary
After a decade, Adriano Espaillat's mandate in the House of Representatives ends after being defeated by Darializa Avila Chevalier
Adriano Espaillat, president of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, was defeated by Darializa Avila Chevalier, who was supported by Zohran Mamdani, mayor of New York, in the Democratic primary for the House of Representatives.
The outcome of the 13th Congressional District race ended the seasoned politician's tenure in the House of Representatives, which he took office in 2016.
According to the most recent data, with around 86% of the minutes counted, Ávila Chevalier registers 32,100 votes in favor, which represents 49.3% support; while Adriano Espaillat obtained 29,929 votes to close at 46.2%, which reflects a difference of close to 2,100 votes between both contenders.
At the start of the count, Espaillat led the results with a slight advantage, but as soon as Ávila Chevalier exercised control of the count, he did not relinquish it.
Now, the probability that Chevalier will win the seat in dispute is very high considering the Democratic strength in New York ahead of the November elections.
After confirming his defeat, Adriano Espaillat issued a message of gratitude for the years in which the support of citizens allowed him to make his way in American politics.
"Tonight was not our night, but I still love you. When I came to this nation as a young immigrant, I never imagined I would become a member of Congress. It is the greatest privilege of my life to serve you, the community, and I will continue to love and serve this community in the best way possible," he exclaimed.
