Fire in Hermosillo market, Sonora, Mexico, leaves at least 23 dead
The fire also injured 12 people who were taken to nearby medical centers
A fire in a market in the city of Hermosillo, in northern Mexico, left at least 23 people dead this Saturday.
According to authorities, the fire was caused by an explosion due to a failure in the warehouse's electrical system.
In the report made by the Sonora state government, most of the victims, among the deaths, which reportedly included several Minors died from inhaling toxic gases caused by the fire. The flames also injured 12 people who were taken to nearby medical centers. According to local media reports, many people sought refuge inside the warehouse after hearing an explosion, but died inside due to smoke inhalation. The governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, told local media that an investigation will be launched to determine the cause of the fire. “We need to know who is responsible for this incident,” Durazo said. The State Attorney General's office stated that they are working under the hypothesis that it was an accident, but “other possible causes for the fire are not being ruled out.” The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed her condolences through a message on the X account. “My deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died in the fire at a store in downtown Hermosillo,” said the mayor. “I have been in contact with the governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, to offer any support needed. I instructed the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodriguez, to send a support team to assist the families and the injured,” she added. The Hermosillo city administration canceled local celebrations for the traditional Day of the Dead, which is commemorated throughout the country.
