Houston reopens public housing waiting lists: dates, requirements and fraud alert
Houston to reopen public housing waitlists in June. Know who can apply, what dates to review and how to avoid fraud during the process
In a city where the cost of housing continues to put pressure on thousands of families, Houston will have a key opportunity in June: Waiting lists for eight public housing properties will reopen for the first time since 2023, the Houston Chronicle reported after a meeting of the local housing authority. The opening will be for one week, although the final dates have not yet been officially confirmed.
The data matters because public housing usually has long lists, short registration processes and a demand much greater than the actual availability. For low-income families, seniors, people with disabilities, and households already waiting for housing assistance, missing an application window can mean months or years more without a stable option.
The agency in charge, now called Housing Alliance HTX and previously known as Houston Housing Authority, announced that it will release more details on June 1. For now, the central point is clear: interested people should start reviewing their information, preparing documents and monitoring the official portal, because registration will not be open permanently.

What Houston announced about the waiting list
Waiting lists for eight Houston public housing properties are scheduled to open for one week in June. In a first internal communication, the period from June 15 to 26 was mentioned, but later a spokesperson clarified that those dates were not yet confirmed. The most complete official information is expected on June 1.
The housing authority board also unanimously approved allowing eligible households already on the Housing Choice Voucher program waiting list to join public housing lists when they open.
According to the report, around 2,500 households are currently on that voucher list and will be able to receive the opportunity to “cross” their application without going through an additional lottery.
This point is especially important for those who had already started a process and do not want to lose their place due to lack of updating. The housing authority indicated that applicants on the voucher list will be notified about the possibility of being added to specific property lists.
Who can apply for public housing in Houston
Public housing is intended for low-income families and individuals. According to HUD, eligibility is determined primarily by three criteria: annual gross income, whether the person qualifies as an older adult, person with a disability or family, and whether they have U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status.
This does not mean that everyone who applies will receive housing. Signing up for a waiting list is just the first step. The housing authority can then verify income, household composition, documentation, references and other requirements before approving assistance.
In practical terms, you should pay special attention to:
What should you review before registration opens?
The biggest risk in these processes is finding out late or applying with incomplete information. That is why it is advisable to check the official Housing Alliance HTX portal now, where the “Apply for Housing”, “Waiting List Status” and RentCafe sections appear.
The agency's own website identifies Housing Alliance HTX as Houston's housing authority and offers information about communities, programs, residents, owners and official contact.
Prior to opening, families should have basic information on hand for all household members, current income, identification, updated contact information, and any documentation related to disability, age, or family composition, if applicable.
It is also key to only use official channels. During these periods, messages, supposed managers or publications often circulate that promise to accelerate access to housing. No person should pay to “secure” a place on a waiting list or submit sensitive data on unverified links.
What happens if you are already on the Housing Choice Voucher list
Those already on the Housing Choice Voucher program list should pay special attention. According to the local report, these households will be notified about the possibility of joining the public housing lists of specific properties without having to enter a new lottery.
The difference between both programs is important.
HUD explains that Section 8 vouchers can benefit low-income families, older adults, and people with disabilities.
For those who are already on a list, the most urgent advice is to verify that the email, telephone and address are updated in the system. If the authority sends a notification and the family does not respond in time, you could lose an opportunity.

Key dates to watch: summary
Opening lists does not guarantee immediate housing, but it can be a gateway to a very competitive process. For thousands of homes in Houston, that door has been closed since 2023.
