ICE releases the mother of a Marine in San Diego, but her husband was deported
A Hispanic mother was released by ICE and reunited with her son, a Marine, however, her husband was deported to Tijuana
After spending almost three weeks detained by ICE, the mother of a US Marine, named Luisa Rodriguez, was released in San Diego, California. However, her husband was deported to Tijuana just one day after his arrest.
The mother of Marine Steve Rios was arrested on September 28 while trying to visit her pregnant daughter at Camp Pendleton, accompanied by her husband Esteban Rios, NBC San Diego reported.
According to the family, ICE agents detained them at the entrance to the military base and, subsequently, both were taken to a detention center.
Initially, both were released with ankle monitors, but when they went to an appointment with the agency a week later, they were arrested again.
Esteban Rios, who was wearing a T-shirt with the phrase “Proud father of a US Marine,” was deported to Tijuana the next day, while Rodriguez was taken to the Otay Mesa Detention Center.
A mother's reunion with her son, an infant of Marine
On Wednesday night, Steve and his aunt drove from Oceanside to the San Ysidro trolley station, near the border, where they hoped to find her.
Shortly before 9:00 pm, a white SUV pulled up and Steve yelled, “Mom!” when he saw her get out wearing the same clothes she had on the day she was arrested. They hugged each other, both in tears.
“I feel happy now because I'm back with my family and I hope my husband comes home soon,” she told Telemundo News. "I want to thank all the officers who were kind to me and all the women who were there. I pray that I can go home soon."
Rodriguez recounted that her time in detention was a nightmare: she couldn't sleep or eat and felt deeply sad. “I was very depressed, but now I'll be better,” she said. Although the family celebrates the reunion, the marine said his heart still feels empty because his father is missing. “My dad is still not here, but at least today we achieved a great victory by bringing my mom back,” she said.
