Immigrant dies in ICE custody in Florida
The man was arrested by ICE in September 2025 and taken into custody at the Krome Detention Center for deportation proceedings
Hasan Ali Moh'D Saleh, a 67-year-old Jordanian citizen detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), died at Larkin Community Hospital in Miami on October 11, according to official information. The preliminary cause of death was cardiac arrest.
According to official information, Saleh had a significant medical history, including high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, and diabetes.
Saleh entered the United States on March 8, 1994, as a nonimmigrant and was subsequently convicted of welfare fraud in 1994. Later that year, he obtained lawful permanent residence. In 2018, Saleh was convicted of conspiracy to commit food stamp fraud and wire fraud, resulting in a 24-month prison sentence. ICE located him in 2019 following his convictions for aggravated felony offenses.
An immigration judge ordered Saleh's deportation to Jordan in 2020 and he was released under supervision, however, he was arrested again in 2025 in Pompano Beach, Florida, to begin deportation proceedings.
This would be the second death of an immigrant in ICE custody so far in fiscal year 2026, which began on October 1.
Leo Cruz-Silva, 34, from Mexico, died on October 4 in the Ste. Genevieve County Jail in Missouri.
ICE recorded at least 21 deaths of immigrants in its custody in fiscal year 2025, matching the number of deaths in 2020 during the pandemic.
Last Sunday, the deaths of two immigrants were also reported in El Paso, Texas. Axel Evarado Iquic-Sequen, 30, of Guatemala, and Manuel Mateo Lopez, 22, of Mexico, died when the vehicle they were traveling in with five other undocumented immigrants crashed while they were trying to flee from Border Patrol.
