Immigrant with a Green Card that cares for his wife with cancer is detained by ICE
Duwayne Baugh immigrated from Jamaica years ago and obtained his Green Card shortly after
A Jamaican immigrant named Duwayne Baugh, a permanent resident in the United States, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in New York after showing up for a routine appointment in August.
The case has generated further controversy because the detainee was caring for his wife, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The American woman, named Kaiisha Baugh, publicly denounced the situation, stating that the arrest represents an act of cruelty, since she depends on her support during this critical stage of her illness.
The Arrest of Duwayne Baugh
According to Newsweek, Duwayne Baugh, 49, was arrested on August 13 during a routine search of an office in the Bronx. Although he has a green card and has lived in the United States since emigrating from Jamaica as a teenager, he currently remains in custody at the Orange County Correctional Center in New York.
According to immigration authorities, the arrest is related to his prior criminal record. On several occasions, Baugh faced charges related to possession of firearms. In 2007, an incident involving a gun he was carrying landed him in prison, while in 2020 he was arrested again after a violent incident while trying to protect his family.
After serving his sentence, ICE had allowed him to be released to care for his ailing wife, although it has now summarized the removal process.
In addition, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) described Baugh as an "illegal alien" and "repeat offender" with a record that includes crimes related to weapons, drugs, and home invasion.
Duwayne's Importance to His Wife
Baugh's defense argues that the measure is disproportionate, considering that his permanent residence remains in effect and that his role as his wife's primary caregiver should be taken into account.
According to Newsweek, Duwayne's wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2021, an illness that completely transformed the family's life. Doctors warned that her lifespan might be limited, making her husband's daily presence even more necessary.
For years, he has been her primary caregiver, providing physical and emotional support amid demanding treatments and a delicate prognosis. For the family, his arrest represents a double burden: the forced separation and the lack of the fundamental support Kaiisha needs in the most critical phase of her illness.
Duwayne's life in the United States
Baugh arrived in New York at age 14 and has spent more than three decades in the country, where she started a family and put down roots. Over the years, he has worked and lived as a legal resident, developing a strong bond with the community where he settled.
Despite the charges against him, Kaiisha says the episodes that led him to face problems with the law do not reflect his daily life, marked by the search for stability and family support.
Baugh's future will be decided in the immigration courts, where a judge will evaluate both his criminal record and his personal circumstances.
